SWTOR 1.7.1 Data Dump

Yesterday, the SWTOR live servers received patch 1.7.1.  Most of the patch seemed to revolve around the Cartel market.  The data dump for this patch pretty much shows the same.

Monocle.  Looks like a monocle will be introduced with the next set of Packs.  I can't help but think of Eve Online and their Monocle debacle.

Jawagrams.  Looks like BioWare will be expanding upon their Valentines Day inspired Jawagrams.  Party on, dude!

A Trip to Mythic - Part 1

Several weeks ago myself, Mykiel and Gaarawarr were invited down to Mythic for a day at the studio.  At the time, we had no idea why we were being invited down.  Of course our minds filled with many possibilities.  Was WAR going F2P?  Was WoH coming out of beta?  And many more.  Sadly, these turned out not to be true.

The day started out with the news that Wrath of Heroes would be shutting down.  I was pretty surprised at the news, as I did not expect to get bad news during a trip to visit the studio.  I have to give them props and respect for breaking the news face to face though.  It could not have been an easy thing to do.

We then discussed some of what they were going to do with WoH from now until closing.  Most of it revolved around releasing new heroes at a frantic pace.  It seems they have a lot of them waiting in the wings and want players to get a chance to play them.  They will also reduce the gold cost of them, so they can actually be bought in time.  They have some really neat Heroes coming up!

They also talked a bit about providing some sort of incentive to play other games, like WAR.  we found out yesterday that WoH players will get a nice package to jump start their WAR experience.  I know I'm looking forward to jumping one of my low level alts to level 30 :)

As for WoH, I was certainly sad to hear the news about its closing.  I only played it casually though, as WAR was still my game of choice.  Mythic made an original game concept, which was a risk.  Sometimes it does not work out so I cannot fault them for trying.  People may wonder what might have been if these resources were spent on WAR instead.  There is no guarantee that the resources would have been used elsewhere at all though.

Speaking of WAR, we'll talk about that in Part 2.  I will say it's nothing too crazy, so don't let your mins wander that much :)

Wrath of Heroes is Shutting Down

Today, Mythic announced that they will be shutting down Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes. The end will come on March 29th.  It's not entirely unexpected news, as WoH never really gained the polularity it needed.  I applaud Mythic for trying to make a new game, which was unlike anything else out there.  While it was not always my game of choice, I did have fun playing it from time to time.

There is some good news, players will get a Wrath Chest code which will grant them Warhammer Online (WAR) items, which includes a month of free game time and a level 30 character along with a bunch of other stuff.

I'll have more to say about WoH later this week.

In a Funk

For the past week or so I have been in a bit of a gaming funk.  I have not really played any of the games I usually do.  I haven't really done much programming either on PocketTOR or any of my other projects either.  Part of it is due to work requiring a bit more of my time, I just don't feel like doing much afterwards.

I have not totally been off games though. My daughter and I have been playing Angry Birds on the 360.  She's actually pretty good at it.  I've also been playing some Golden Tee Golf in our little arcade when we are downstairs playing.   So it's really just computer games which have been suffering.  I've been watching TV and reading with my free time instead of being at the computer.

Hopefully this malaise clears up soon as I want to get back to WAR and SWTOR.  I also want to add armor sets to PocketTOR soon as well and get that sucker turned into a real app.  Of course, I think I've caught a cold so that certainly doesn't help with my lack of motivation.

Mythic Compensates Players

Over the past week, Warhammer Online has been suffering from lag and zone crashes.  This was due to a move from traditional servers over to cloud servers.  The culprit seems to have been the Against All Odds system and memory limitations on the cloud servers.

After several failed attempts at fixing the problem, Mythic finally managed to find the precise causes over the weekend.  A fix was deployed and the problems went away.  To make a mends for the issues Mythic decided to give the players the following:
  • 10-Days of game time applied to subscribed account
  • 1 Golden Writ available to subscribed characters
  • 100% XP/RP boost for 7 days for all characters
  • A stack of 10 Lesser Bone Wards available for all characters
  • A special title unlock for anyone who attempted to play between the 18th and the 24th
This is quite a generous  package.  While the free game time is nice... the Golden Writ is pretty awesome.  It can be turned in for any number of nice items.  The Lesser Bone Wards are a new item, which are based off of the permanent item, Bone Ward.  It makes you immune to critical damage and armor penetration for a short time.  Then, of course, there is the new title which I think is a great touch.

Thanks for all the neat stuff Mythic!

The Sad Truth about LoL

Over the past couple of weeks, I have come to a realization about League of Legends.  They recently introduced a new ranking system more akin to Starcraft 2.  Basically, it's all about advancing in your division rather than just upping your ELO.  Each division has sub divisions too, like where I am at: Silver 5.

I can reach Silver 4 by winning a  bunch of matches and getting 100 league Points.  Then I have to win 2 out of 3 promotion matches.  Rinse and repeat until I get ready to go into the Gold division, which I believe requires winning 3 out of 5 in your promotion series.

Anyway, the realization I came to was I have virtually no chance of ever reaching Gold.  Am I a Gold level player?  Maybe, maybe not.  That's not really the issue.  The problem is I just cannot play enough games to make it there.  If I completely dedicate myself to LoL, which is not likely, I could probably fit in 2 games a day during the week on average.

On the weekends, maybe I could play 4 a day.  That's with me not playing any other games.  It would still take a long time for me to climb out of Silver 5 and into Gold.  That's not even considering what it would take to reach ever higher divisions.

So what's the solution to this rather demoralizing problem?  Smaller goals is probably the answer.  If I forget about Gold and higher divisions and just concentrate on moving up in the Silver division then I still have an achievable goal.  In the back of my mind, I'll still know Silver is still Silver though.

Return to Ekrund Changes

Warhammer Online's Return to Ekrund Live Event has been in full swing for a few weeks now.  Overall, it has been a fun event, but there have been a few problems. In particular, the clue quests and the Attack/Defend quests have been a bit of a pain for players to complete.

These woes have not fallen on deaf ears.  Yesterday, changes were made to the events task list which should make the event easier to complete.

The Attack/Defend tasks have been removed from the Return to Ekrund event. They have been replaced by a task to kill enemy-allies (meaning, the two other non-GvD races of the enemy realm) in any ORvR area, and a task to kill enemies in any GvD scenario.
In addition, the clue requirement for the Quest has been lowered to 2 (down from 10), so you now only need 20 clues total for the event task (instead of 100, as it was before).

These changes should make the event easier to complete and overall much more enjoyable.  Requiring 80 fewer clues is quite a nice change :)   Before I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to obtain the elite reward, now I am going to try.

SWTOR 2.0 Detailed

Yesterday, BioWare announced that SWTOR version 2.0 was live on the PTS!  I was really not expecting it to be on their so soon after the 1.7 patch, but I guess they want plenty of testing.  The Rise of the Hutt Cartel  expansion pack is also a part of the 2.0 patch, but is not enabled.  What that means is everyone gets 2.0, but the RotHC content is only available to those who purchase it.

So what does 2.0 include?
  • New gear available only to level 55 characters.
  • A new Operation: Scum and Villainy.
  • New abilities and skill trees for all 16 Advanced Classes
  • .New level 55 Hard Mode Flashpoints: Hammer Station, Athiss, Mandalorian Raiders, and Cademimu.
  • New Nightmare Mode Operation: Terror from Beyond.
  • Legacy Achievements – Complete challenges to earn unique titles and vanity rewards across your Legacy.
The patch notes can be found here

With 2.0 already being on the PTS, how long until we see it live?  They said Rise of the Hutt Cartel would be released this Spring, which begins March 20th.  Seems like we could see it at the very beginning!  It would also work into their 6-8 week timeframe goal.

Camelot Unchained

Recently, former Mythic co-founder Mark Jacobs has been on a media blitz talking about his next MMO project: Camelot Unchained.  Sound familiar?  It should, as Mythic still runs Dark Age of Camelot.  As you can imagine, this has stirred up a bit of controversy.  I am of two minds on the subject.  First, I'll put on the Blogger hat.

Blogger.  Over the years, Mythic has been very good to me.  Through the core tester program and several visits to the studio, they have really made me feel involved with a game I love (WAR).  That has earned them some loyalty from me, which is only natural.

During one of Mark's early interviews about CU, he basically threw his team under the bus for WAR's shortcomings.  I don't know Mark, so I can't say if it was intentional, but as the leader the buck stops with him.  So using your team as an excuse is pretty weak.

I also find it strange to be going up against your former company by making pretty much the same game.  The working title even has Camelot in it, and we know it has 3 realms, which happen to be the some of the same as the original title.  Again, I'm a bit biased when I have my blogger hat on, but come on.

Now, time to slide on the gamer hat.

Gamer.  I can't help but be interested in what Mark is selling.  I never played DAoC during it's heyday. The game feels too dated to try and get into now.  So a new version of DAoC definitely piques my interest.  I love progressing via PvP, I also love distinct classes and lots of them.  Those are both features Camelot Unchained is offering.  It would seem to be right up my alley.

On the downside,  the game has no funding at the moment.  A kickstarter is planned to go live in March where they hope to earn millions of dollars.  That's a pretty lofty goal which only a few games have managed to pull off.  What happens if they don't reach it, is CU kaput?  Even if they do reach it, the game still needs to be built.  So it'll be a while before anyone gets to play it.

So yeah, I'm a but torn over Camelot Unchained.  It sounds like it could be very interesting, but it also seems wrong to go after your former company like that.

Mythic Responds to Event Feedback

Last week, WAR's lead developer Keaven took some time to respond to a feedback thread about the Return to Ekrund Live Event.  Overall, I thought the event was a good one.  There were some issues with certain tasks encouraging kill trading and macro behavior.
One issue was clues.  It required 100 of them to complete the task.  These could be had by clicking on them in the world, or getting them from kills.  I think it was a good task, but 100 was way too much.  Keaven will be reducing this to 20 soon.

Another issue involved the Attack and Defend missions at certain Battlefield Objectives. Since there were requirements for this one, like owning/not owning a BO, it ended up being easier to trade kills using cross realming, which was certainly not the intention.  Keaven proposes changing these to simple kill quests based on character race.  I think that'll be a much better way to go.

The upgraded item was not intended to be permanent. We’ve encountered a handful of random errors with this event deployment, where data was missing from the Live servers where it exists everywhere else in the deployment line. We have no idea what caused the issue, but have been able to quickly address the issues, and fix them when they’ve been found... except, admittedly, for this permanent-item issue. The question I’m facing at the moment is, now that the permanent version is out there, do we just leave it as the reward for those who completed the event this first go-round, and swap in the decaying one when we release Part 2? Or do I say, "sorry, my bad" and force all existing permanent versions to auto-convert to the ones that decay?
The clues you need to collect for the clue quest aren’t only found by clicking on walls; clues can also be obtained through RvR combat. However, I’m considering lowering the clue requirement on the Quest to 2; meaning you would need a total of 20 clues, after doing the quest 10 times, rather than the 100 needed currently.
Speaking of updating things… I’m very, very unhappy at how cross-realming has taken over the event. While some may argue the event was structured in a way that fostered such behavior, I would respond with any player-killing task at all is open for abuse by cross-realming. It is just a shame that those who want to PLAY the game are in the minority, compared to those who just want to GAME the game. With that in mind, I’m thinking about changing the Attack/Defend tasks for the event. Instead of Attack/Defend, I’m thinking of these two:
1) Slay your enemies in the Gates of Ekrund Scenario ... 0/100
2) Slaughter the allies of the [Dwarfs/Greenskin] ... 0/2
     A. Kill [Empire/Chaos] Players in Ekrund or Mount Bloodhorn ... 0/25
     B. Kill [High Elf/Dark Elf] Players in Ekrund or Mount Bloodhorn ... 0/25

Watch the LCS on your TV

Season 3 of League of Legends is upon us, and that means matches to watch nearly every week!  Now watching it on the computer is all well and good, but what about from your couch on your TV?  Getting twitch to work on the PS3 and 360 is quite a pain and often does not work.  Moving your computer is also a pain.

I've started using my Xoom tablet to watch LoL on my 42in TV.  This is a couple year old tablet, but it has a mini-HDMI port.  After a quick run to Radio Shack (or an Amazon Order) for a Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable I was all set.  Just plugged my tablet into the TV and it was ready to go. I watched it at 480p, but probably could have went up to 720p... they were having stream troubles, so I wasn't sure if it was me or them.

The only adjustment I had to make to the tablet was its power-saving feature for shutting off the display.  I set it to max, sat back and enjoyed the show.  A lot of phones now have mini-HDMI ports, so those will work too.

The LCS is also now being live streamed on Youtube, so if your TV or DVD player has youtube support, this is yet another option to watch it on your TV.  I have not tried that out, although I may today as I think my Blu-Ray player does Youtube.  The PS3 and 360 also have Youtube apps, so those are possible options too.

I still think G4 or Spike TV should show the LCS, ah well, maybe someday.

Dread Master Styrak

This week, my TORWars Intelligence Report article centered on  Dread Master Styrak.  He is the final boss in the upcoming Scum and Villainy Operation which takes place on the planet Darvannis.  Along with his Codex entry, I also reveal that of his pet, a Kell Dragon.  Go check it out at:

Relics of the Gree Impressions

Yesterday, BioWare launched their 1.7 patch: Return of the Gree.  Included in it is a new recurring event, Relics of the Gree.  It's primarily for those of level 45+ and takes place on a reconstructed Ilum.  The event itself will last two weeks and is tied into the reputation system.  I checked it out yeserday, below are my impressions.

The Good. It looks really cool, especially the Gray Secant starship.  The story and theme behind the event are neat too.  Sadly, that is all the good I have for this event.

The Bad.  Where to start...  It's full of dailies and I hate dailies.  Whether it be the Northern Ice Shelf or the Southern Ice Shelf  the event is all about completing dailies to gain Gree reputation.  That's ok though, some people like dailies.

What's not ok is that there are dailies for the contested area.  These are not PvP dailies, just more PvE dailies. All of the dailies can be completed in the contested area (I think) if you so choose.  There is just the threat of being ganked.  My definition of ganked is doing PvE and getting jumped by an enemy.

It's not a regular PvP area either, its a group restricted free for all area.  That means Republic players can attack other Republic players.  Why would I be doing this on Ilum?  I have no idea.  It doesn't make sense from a lore perspective

I can understand why they went this route though.  Limiting it to 4 person group sizes, it lessens the chance of the zerg.  It's easily bypassed though as I saw a bunch of players from the same guild in there, they just use vent instead of group chat.  Making it a free for all also lessens the chance of a zerg, to an organized group it amounts to friendly fire, which is kinda neat.

I tried to get PvP groups going, but it was mostly just PvEers trying to do their dailies and had no interest in actually engaging the enemy.  I went in solo and got a couple of kills.  You know what I got?  Nothing.  I guess I am spoiled with WAR's PvP progression.

If you like dailies, this is a patch you'll love.  If you were hoping for a revitalization of open world PvP, you might not be so lucky.

SWTOR 1.7 Data Dump

Another patch, another data dump.  We see a lot of it has to do with the new Relics of the Gree event, and the Cartel Market of course.   There are some interesting items, like the Gree Frigate pet and a whole bunch of Social armor which I'm going to guess are reputation rewards.  There is also the Hutt Skiff Mount mentioned!  It shall be mine, whenever we see it in the game.  Feels like a Makeb sort of thing.

Relics of the Gree Starts Tomorrow

SWTOR's 1.7 patch lands tomorrow and with it the start of a new event: Relics of the Gree.  We still don't actually know much about the event itself.  It takes place in a contested part of Ilum (PvP), there is a spaceship, and there is a giant Wampa.  Other than that, who knows how it will work out.

BioWare released a trailer for the event...

I know I'll be there to check it out!

PocketTOR: New Features

Over the weekend, I felt productive and added some new features to PocketTOR.  PT is item database and information portal for SWTOR focused at mobile devices. The item database is neat and all, but I felt it needed something else to be a valuable tool.  I decided to leverage Dev Spy, and add more information.

Live Streams.  The Live Stream section will show you any currently active live streams on both Own3d and Twitch.

TORWars.  This section will have the latest articles from the #1 fansite, TORWars.  I'm not just saying that because I write articles over there either ;)

Reddit.  The latest Reddit posts for SWTOR are also now listed.

With these new features, I think PocketTOR is a much more useful mobile tool, great for providing SWTOR content while out and about.  I've been experimenting with making it a true phone app, instead of a webpage so that may be coming soon :)  You can find it here:  http://pockettor.weritsblog.com/

Secrets in SWTOR

It's nice to know that there are still some secrets in MMO's.  I know that is ironic coming from a data miner like myself.  Recently, I saw this post on TORWars about a group, Carnage Gaming,  taking down the world boss, Dreadtooth. That in itself is not notable, but they did it with 10 stacks.  That makes him extremely difficult to defeat, and they were the first group to pull off the feat.

Watch live video from fuzzycg on TwitchTV

For defeating the boss at that level of difficulty they received an item that summoned a special boss in the  Terror From Beyond Operation.  That boss also dropped a special item, the Dreadful Orb.  Who knows if that is used to unlock yet another secret?

I'm glad to see some mystery still left in our MMO's, even if I'll probably never participate in uncovering them.  That is probably one of the counter arguments.  How much time did it take to design that special boss which only a tiny fraction of the population will see?  Was it worth the resources?  I think it was.

Instant Level 15 Character

Warhammer Online is currently holding the Return to Ekrund Live Event.  One of the interesting parts of this live event is that low level characters can instantly become Level 15 with a renown Rank of 10.  They also get a free teleport to Ekrund so they can join the fight.

The guy with the red icon over his head offers the quest.  Once accepted, you are whisked away to the Ekrund Warcamp.  Once there, you just need to drink the Journeyman's Elixir and you are automatically leveled to 15.  You also receive a bonus XP pocket item.  So if you were ever thinking about making an alt, now is a good time to do it.

On the downside, you still have to pay for the skills and obtain War Crests for gear.  If it is an alt, you can probably afford to send him some gold from your main.  The event will be running for a few more weeks, but will go away eventually!

Now if they would just make an Elixir that made you 40/10, instead of 15 I'd be really happy.  heck, I'd buy that from the Origin Store.  Take my money Mythic :)

PocketTOR: Armed and Dangerous

I'm happy to say that PocketTOR, the mobile device focused item database for SWTOR, now supports weapons.  Each career has a list based on what type of weapons they can use. So Jedi's have lightsabers, while the Imperial Agent has his Sniper Rifle and Vibroknife.

PvP equipment has also been moved to its own category and contains information for each class.  I currently don't have the cost of each item, but that is something I'd like to add soon.

I have also moved PocketTOR to a more appropriate home:  http://pockettor.weritsblog.com/

What's next for PocketTOR?  I'm not really sure.  A way to find out where you can get an item has been a popular request.  Also, I have been experimenting making with making PocketTOR an actual iOS/Android app in addition to being a webpage.

More Darvannis Details

This week, in my article for TORWars, I delved a bit deeper into where SWTOR's next raid will be held.  During my datamining, I found a codex for the planet.  I crafted a little ambiance to go around it and viola, TORWars Intelligence Report: Darvannis Planetary Details.

I enjoyed writing it, hope you enjoy reading it!  Next week, expect even more details about this upcoming raid.

WeritCast: HK-51!

Another week, another episode of WeritCast!  This time, we are back in SWTOR, on a quest for my very own HK-51 Assassin  Droid.  It was a decent questline overall.  I loved the spooky ship and adventure game feeling.  The 'hot or cold' find the part quests I could have done without.  If I had to give it an overall grade, I'd go with a B.  Also shown, Sniper PvP footage from Ancient Hypergate.

PocketTOR: How much is too much?

Development of PocketTOR has been moving along nicely.  PocketTOR is a SWTOR item database focused at mobile devices.  As of yesterday, I can handle regular statted items, items with enhancements and custom items which are empty.  I also got a basic client working, which you can see here (works best on mobile!).

Now for some questions...

1)  Does anyone really care about lesser quality items ( white, green )? I'm thinking of skipping these totally, and focusing on higher quality entries.

2)  Databases like torhead and darthhaterdb list items by their type ( i.e. Heavy Armor).  I'm thinking of taking this approach:  'What can class X use?'  From that, list items that each class can use, ordered by Item Level.  This is the approach I took with the Arsenal of WAR and I think it worked out well.

This is not without its challenges.  There does not seem to be any concept of Imperial and Republic item separation.  It could mean items in the classes list which they may not actually be able to obtain. We'll have to see how it goes.

3)  I'm thinking that Adaptive armor and PvP armor should be their own category, on the same level as the classes.  One aspect of items I have not figured out yet is the concept of sets, so I'll need to do that soon too.
