Memories

Civilization 5 is set for release this September!  Since it is coming out relatively soon, I have started to read up on it.  Civ is one of my favorite game series and I have owned every edition since it started.  I can't help but think back on it.

I was first told about Civilization from some friends at school.  I was hooked immediately when I heard that I could pick a civilization and play from early human history to the future.  At the time, we did not have any sort of computer which could run the game.  Even so, I played out a number of games in my imagination.

Not too long after I was able to get my first computer.  I have had computers before, but this was the first one which was mine.  It was a Compaq Presario which had the state of the art Pentium cpu which ran at a blistering 66mhz!  It was a step up from our old 286.  When we bought the system (at a store!) and picked up a copy of Civilization to go with it.

My first game was played soon after we got home.  I still remember opening the box and seeing the disks and the manual.  Ah the manual, not one of those pamphlets that games include now.  After installing, it was time to get down to business.

When it came to map size, I chose the one which mirrored the real version of Earth.  When it comes to Civ, I always go with the largest map size.  I don't think I have ever chosen anything smaller.  Go epic or go home, that's what I say... starting now.

Next up was my civilization choice.  Much like my choice of map, my civilization has always been either the United States or Rome.  Ceaser or Washington|Lincoln for my leader.  Sure there are a bunch of other civs, but these are my favorite.

Civilization hooked me on strategy games.  It is a shame that Turn Based Strategy games are no longer that popular.  It's ok though, so long as Firaxis keeps the Civ series alive I will be happy.  Needless to say, I will be pre-ordering Civ 5.
