Friday Black-Hole

Does it feel like a black-hole is stationed next to your cubical, slowing time down to a crawl?  Each second seems to take longer than the next.  Sure, you could buckle down and work, but who are we kidding?  The answer is out there, somewhere (like after the break).

Passing the time

Another Friday is upon us.  What better way to help the day go by faster than surfing the web?

This week on Werit we saw...

Warhammer Online gets a new beginning.
We watched many a ship be blown up in Gratuitous Space Battles
Cliff Harris came by to chat about said space ships blowing up.
We learned about WAR's plan to get everyone involved in RvR... well almost everyone.

Elsewhere...

Syp tells us what Star Trek Online should learn from Champions Online.
Guess who's back? JoBildo's back!
Syncaine tells the tale of how they lost a city.
Triumph at the Star Wars opening.  Yea it's old but still hilarious.
Grimnir  discovers the long sought after WAR poems.

Have a good weekend!

Valhalla or Bust

For your Friday reading pleasure, may I present an interview I did for Grinding to Valhalla. It offers a bit of insight to why I blog and other such important topics.

If you do not want to read about yours truly, then maybe some of these links will tickle your fancy.

Where are they?

It occurs to me that we have not heard too much from Mark Jacobs or Paul Barnett lately...

Q: Where are Mark and Paul?

According to twitter, Paul has become an Orc version of Martha Stewart and is setting up a hobby room at Mythic.

As for Mark, I heard that he is on a mission to prove that token gear can actually be obtained. Until that point, he has no time to post.

Seriously though, these two were the face of WAR. Mark especially used to be pretty common on the VN boards. I always thought the way he interacted with the community was great. For the past month (at least), we have heard very little from Mark. Sure, he could just be very busy... but his silence is not very reassuring.

Beyond the Sands Verdict

It has been a busy week for Warhammer Online due to the Beyond the Sands Live Event. I think this was a record amount of posts for me. So for Friday, I'll take it easy.

Q: What did you think of Beyond the Sands?

Overall, I thought it was one of the better live events. The Quests and story was engaging and there was plenty of RvR action. There are areas for improvement but nothing too major.

Zone Domination: Yay or Nay?

One of the many new things that the 1.2 patch brought us is zone domination. An alternative approach to lock a zone, centered in the RvR lakes. Prior to release, there was much debate about how well it would work.

Q. How do you like Zone Domination so far?

I am enjoying it. It's simplicity makes for a more fun experience. Also, the timers let you see an end is in sight. When the timers get close to zero, you start to feel a sense of urgency to take back an objective or defend it. I think that is something that was lacking with the old zone locking system.

It is too soon to say if it has been a success or not. Once the 1.2 population inflation settles down, we'll better be able to see the long term effect.

If you could reroll...

Q: If you had the one-time choice (in any MMO) to switch your class with another, retaining level and similar equipment, would you? If so, what change you would make?

For me, it would be my WoW Warrior. As much as I like Titans Grip and their tanking, I would trade him for a Paladin. They are just so much more versatile with their healing options.

In WAR, I am pretty happy with my Engineer.

Free vs Paid Expansions

Is there anything more exciting than new MMO content? Maybe, but for this blog post, no. Most often this new content comes to us via expansions. Sometimes they are free, sometimes they need to be paid for. Each MMO has its own idea of how this should be done. For this post, content additions and expansions are roughly equal.

On the free side you have games like Eve, Star Wars Galaxies and City of Heroes/Villains. They tend to release new content, at decent intervals, for just the cost of the subscription. SWG recently released the Battle for Hoth and an Appearance Tab system. CoX put out Issue 13, which had many improvements.

If you added up all of the free content those games release for a year, would it add up to a paid expansion? I think in many cases it would, but then you would have to add in the fact that you had to wait. Free expansions allow for more additions, quicker which means a more dynamic game.

On the pay side, you have games like WoW and Everquest. These games do put out free content upgrades too, but usually they are few and far between (I am looking at you WoW). When they do put out a paid expansion, it is usually packed full of content and worth the wait. The downside is that paid expansions can be slow to hit the marketplace.

Finally there is the hybrid, like Lord of the Rings Online. They put out free content updates (Book 13 ) pretty regularly and a rather large paid expansion (Mines of Moria).

As far as WAR goes, we will have to wait and see what approach they take. I think it will be a hybrid, but I can't recall where I heard that. They have released 2 new careers so far and have plans to release another two soon. These were cut from launch, but are free content none the less. I can't wait to hear their ideas for a paid expansion.

What kind of expansion do you prefer?

I would have to go for LoRTO. It seems that they are giving their customers the best of both worlds in terms of content. I really do like the free updates, however, I suspect a paid expansion can be very healthy for a game. Maybe it is just psychological, but the expectations are higher when shelling out extra money, regardless of the amount of free content they have been releasing.

Would you play a text based game?

With the announcement of Zork coming back, it got me thinking about text based games (MUD or Interactive Fiction). There are many great writers out there who would probably love to have readers be able to play in the world they created. Sadly, creating a game these days is a huge effort that would leave little time for actual writing.

Text based games have always been much more content driven and flexible. Although they are not seen much anymore, they still do exist. So my question to you is:

Q: Would you play a text based game anymore (single player or MUD like)? What would it take for you to play one regularly in terms of features (assuming it is free to play)? Or have text based games ridden into the sunset?

Friday Question: Favorite Holiday Movie

Here we are, in the holiday's hangover. I guess there still is New Years, but it really doesn't compare, now does it? One of my favorite things about this time of year is the movies. There are so many great ones.

Q: What is your favorite holiday movie?

Mine would have to be Christmas Vacation. Funny and in the spirit of the holidays.

What is yours?

Friday Question: WAR 1.10a

Yesterday saw the release of the much anticipated 1.10a patch for Warhammer Online. You can read about it here, here and here. So my question to you is:

Q: Now that patch 1.10a is live, what do you think about it?

Personally, I am actually disappointed. Not in the content of the patch but in the implementation. This version feels much buggier than the previous.
  • CTD's in the previous months: 0. CTD's last night: 2
  • Players going invisible has gotten much worse. It used to be just large fight, now it happens all the time even when just standing in a warcamp.
  • Buff icons (and the warband windows) like to sometimes stick around. Don't you want to go home?
  • I get a white wipe over my action bars when the global cooldown (GCD) is over.
  • Death seems to be a tad delayed now. I was running around for maybe 10 seconds with the respawn notification on my screen.
I appreciate that Mythic wants to get content out to the players quickly, but it seems like it could use a little more time in Q&A. The first 2 bugs I listed are the important ones, the latter 3 are just mildly annoying. This patch just feels rushed and unpolished. More on the actual content in another post.

Edit: Mythic did release an update late last night. I will not be able to check it out until tonight, so the problems above existed when I logged off last night.

Friday Feedback: WAR Addons

My question to you, on this snowy Friday, is:

Do you use any addons for WAR? If so, which ones and why?

I currently do not use any. I'm not even sure what is out there and what I am missing.

Worst Grind Ever?

For me, that award goes to:Yes, a road. 495 is the beltway around Washington DC. I used to have to travel on it daily, now only rarely. Still, it makes me sick just thinking about having to get on it. The traffic knows no logic or time of day. The best laid plans can be ruined by this beast. Why does this heavily trafficked highway go down to 2 lanes? Just one of the many questions about this Grind....

So how about you?

Friday Question: Post Frequency

This one goes out to all you bloggers and readers out there.

Q: What is your philosophy on posting frequency? Is less more, or more the merrier?

I generally try to keep it to one post a day. There are a couple reasons for this: One, I don't want to run out of things to write about. Two, I like to give what I have written a fair amount of time on the front page (or top of RSS).

Of course, I usually have plenty of thoughts on what to write about, so I could probably handle more than one post a day. And to my second point, that may just be the way I think it should be and not reality.

What do you guys think?

Friday Question: Favorite T1 Zone

My favorite T1 zone would have to be Ekrund, the Dwarf starting zone. The mountains and snow just look great. There are some really tall mountains and really deep ravines. I think it does a great job of immersion. I am also a big fan of Dwarf architecture. Ekrund has it on a grand scale.

The RvR area also features a nice big wall, and I love walls. Stems from building sand castles at the Jersey shore in my youth I suppose.

The world designers did a great job with Ekrund.

So what is your favorite T1 zone in WAR?

Friday Question: Blogging and Character Name

This one goes out to all you bloggers out there:

Will you play a character with the same name as your blogging handle?
