Who watches the Watchmen?

Werit does!

I finally got to see the Watchmen today. As usual I am behind the times. I never read the comics or even heard of the series before the movie came out. So I may be ignorant, likely am. Overall I thought it was a decent movie. Good action and an interesting story. A couple of things did bother me though.

One, I don't like invincible characters. Superman, Dr. Manhattan, whoever. Superman did at least have a real weakness. But they tend to ruin the story for me. Just like in the Lord of the Rings movies with the undead army. They swept in and killed everything making everything else pointless, what the hell?

They also killed off the interesting characters and left us with the lame ones. That is totally subjective of course. I won't spoil who lived, but I'm sure you'll be able to guess at the lame characters that will live.

Werit watches Defiance

I watched Defiance this weekend. As I don't go for long reviews, here is what you need to know.

Action - Low/Medium. High would be Commando, the greatest action movie ever.
Revenge - Yes!
Cliches - Low, based on true story
Sad - A little
Come out cursing Nazi's? Yes
Make you appreciate how good you have it? Yes
Worth a rent? If you like history + action.

Number 5 is alive

Well no, not really. WALL-E is though. I got WALL-E a few weeks ago on Blu-Ray and finally had a chance to write down something about the film. I am a sucker for animation movies these days, as they are usually pretty good. I would say WALL-E fell under the category of pretty good.

The story was not the best, in fact there was no talking at all for quite a bit. That did not really bother me though and didn't even occur to me at the time. You can tell a story without the spoken word. Overall the plot was pretty basic, but hey this is a kids movie after all. It isn't the happiest of the Disney movies but isn't their most depressing either.

It looked amazing in High Definition. The space scenes were great. I am continually impressed with how great they can make animated movies look. I really wish I had scene this in one of the 3D capable theaters. They need to hurry up and get a GOOD home 3d system out, that doesn't require two projectors. I will wear the funny glasses, I am not ashamed.

Friday Question: Favorite Holiday Movie

Here we are, in the holiday's hangover. I guess there still is New Years, but it really doesn't compare, now does it? One of my favorite things about this time of year is the movies. There are so many great ones.

Q: What is your favorite holiday movie?

Mine would have to be Christmas Vacation. Funny and in the spirit of the holidays.

What is yours?

Dark Knight

This weekend I watched Dark Knight on Blu-Ray. I had never seen it in theaters but heard a lot of good things. I was a little worried that it would not live up to the hype, but thankfully it did. This was probably one of the best movies I have seen this year, which is saying something as it has been a good year for movies.

The picture and sound were top notch. Although for movies like this, I wish I had a projector and a 100" screen. Ah well, the next iteration of my TV area will have one. Sadly, that day is years off. On the bright side, the projectors will be very nice and even more affordable by that time.

*** Spoiler Warning ***

Some random thoughts:
  • Batman's voice seems a lot more horse than in the first movie.
  • That banker keeps a shotgun in his desk... nice.
  • The joker character was very well done. I liked Nicholson's version and I think this was just as good.
  • Good to see Zeus and Anthony Michael Hall around. This movie had a lot of people in it.
  • IMDB does not show a third entry being made, but I would think they would make one.
  • Did they leave the door open for the Joker character to return? It seems he could have his own movie, although without Ledger it may not work.
  • Who could be the villain (s) in the third movie? Yet another Catwoman? A new take on the Penguin? A sick and twisted Riddler might be interesting. Maybe a brand new villain?

The Forbidden Kingdom

Yesterday I took a break from WAR, for some kung-fu war. The Forbidden Kingdom is a film starting Jackie Chan and Jet Li. I am not a huge martial arts film guy, but I do enjoy them on occasion.

The plot was: good guys, bad guys and kung-fu. What more do you need? The action sequences were well done with lots of beat downs being handed down. The movie reminded me of an 80's movie too, as there was an American teenager who is in over his head and has a crazy adventure. Also, a bully gets what is coming to him.

The movie was a bit silly at times, yea King Monkey I am looking at you. It was made for Western markets, so no subtitle or dubbing needed. It is pretty amazing how Jet-Li can star in so many movies without really every saying anything. He just gets paid for ass kickings. Sounds like a sweet gig, I think I will look that up on careerbuilder.

28 minutes later...

I changed the channel.

I am speaking of the movie 28 Weeks Later. I was in a movie mood last weekend and saw this was On Demand, for free. I am not a huge Zombie flick fan, but the first one was decent, so I gave it a shot.

**Spoilers***

I knew it was going to suck after the opening scene. Basically, there was a husband and wife being attacked by zombies in a house. The wife runs off to save some kid she met 2 minutes ago and zombies get in between her and the husband. Remember, these are fast super-zombies in the 28 series, so the husband could really do nothing. He ran, leaving the wife to her fate.

We never do see a death blow and the husband is made to be a coward. Next we see their kids coming back to London. During a medical exam, the Doctor notices the boy has different color eyes. This is a genetic oddity he got from his mother. Very subtle fore shadowing! Fast forward a few minutes over stupid plot holes and stupid kids... the mother is alive. and back at the compound for study.

it just so happens that the father (husband) is a janitor and can access every single room of this military installation, including the unguarded Zombie room. Next, I turned it off. I checked out imdb to confirm my suspicions that the rest of the movie was a waste of time, and it was. I also realized it was made by different people than the original, 28 Days Later.

Beware: It sounds like they setup for yet another lame sequel!
