There is no BioWare Mythic, there is only Mythic

It looks like BioWare Mythic has gotten itself newish name: Mythic.  Not Mythic Entertainment, just Mythic. It appears this re-branding is based on the studio's new mobile-centric focus :(  Otherise, it means nothing for us WAR/WoH/DAoC/UO players.

http://uo.com/article/BioWare-Mythic-now-known-Mythic

In the wake of a new focus our studio has recently changed its name from BioWare Mythic to Mythic. Everything else stays the same - our passionate teams will continue to support and develop our existing titles as well as working on some new and exciting projects.

ARAM and League of Legends

ARAM, which stands for All Random All Middle, is a new un-official game mode for League of Legends.  It usually takes place on the Proving Grounds map (used for the tutorial).  Basically, everyone is assigned a random Champion from their pool and they fight it out on a single lane map.  There are some small rule adjustments, but the goal remains the same.

I had heard about this mode of play, but never really tried it.  that was until Gaarawaar started to talk about it on twitter.  He mentioned it was quick and fun, and I'm all about that.  So I went to the custom game list and found a match.  Here is how it started off...

Dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, MATCH!

In a custom game, there is no penalty for queue dodging.  Luckily spots filled up quickly, but it was still a crazy amount of dodges.  ARAM's I have played since then have been pretty much the same.

Once in the game I had a lot of fun.  Just a lot of fighting, and very little pressure.  Since champions are random,  there might be a bit of a learning curve if he has gone unused.  The same goes for everyone else, so it felt a lot more laid back.  I really liked playing new champions too, which I wouldn't if I was in ranked Summoners Rift.

My hope is that Riot makes this an official game mode soon.  That way we can queue up for it and hopefully lessen the amount of dodges.  I like it more than Dominion and it's quicker (usually) than a Summoners Rift match.  I just don't see myself playing un-ranked SR matches, so this could be my go to type of game when not playing ranked.

New and Improved

If you have been to the blog in the last couple of days you might have noticed the new Sites with Benefits widget.   If not, it is on the right hand side of the page.  I think it looks much better than the old version, but I'm sure there is still room for improvement.  What do you think?
Beta!  Sites with Benefits is now in a state where I feel comfortable having other people use it on their sites. I added a several beta codes as a Reward, so if you are interested you can grab one and get started.  Just logging in will give you enough points to obtain one.

Missions.  Sites with Benefits is up to 13 mission types.  Those include Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Google +1 sharing along with Polls, Video/URL Submissions, Trivia and more!

Next Giveaway.  Next week (Monday), the WAR Giveaway will begin.  The big prize will be a 60-day time-card, but I hope to have some other rewards you can choose from as well.  I'm also going to be trying out a new kind of Mission which involves doing some tasks in the game.

Overall, I think the project is going well.  I find it pretty useful, and I hope others will too.

Unified Currency, Take Two

As I mentioned last week, WAR is moving towards a unified RvR currency instead of having 25 or so separate ones.  Lead Developer Keaven Freeman has been on the forums discussing the issue with players, which has resulted in a new plan.

The nice thing about this plan is that vendors would not have their own conversion table, which ended up making items more expensive.  You may notice the Early Adoption column, this would probably be a weekend (announced beforehand) where you get a special conversion rate in order to encourage people to convert their currency.

As with most any change, not everyone agrees with this route.  I doubt there will ever be a consensus regarding any change in WAR, but at least there is a dialog going on between players and developers.  In the end, that is what really matters, even if it doesn't go your way.

Garden of Morr

A couple weeks ago, the Durrig's Secret Stash giveaway was held for Wrath of Heroes.  One of the missions for it was to create a video.  When the giveaway finished up, we had 16 new Wrath of Heroes videos!  Thanks to everyone who submitted one.

Here are the video submissions having to do with WoH's newest map, the Garden of Morr.

Werit Goes to the Dogs

One of the rewards for WAR's Daemonic Gifts of Khorne event is a scroll that turns you into a Flesh Hound.  It isn't just for show, as you get a whole new set of abilities to use.  There are actually 3 scrolls you can choose from, the other two being a Bloodletter and Juggernaut.

Here are the hounds abilities...

The abilities do not do much in the way of damage, but the effects are very nice.  Crush Hands cuts the targets outgoing damage by 50%.  Bloodthirsty Howl is an AoE Action Point Drain.  Savage Lunge is a knockdown.  All very useful.

And, of course, a video!

Werit and the Storm Legion

Last week, I had the opportunity to see Rift's new expansion first hand with a guided tour by former WAR Community Manager, James Nichols.  It's no secret that Rift isn't my game of choice, but as a MMO fan I've been following it for quite a while and played during beta and launch.  Is Storm Legion enough to get me back into the game?

First, let's start with a montage of some of what I saw. I think every morning should start like this actually.

PvP.  One of my first questions was about PvP, of course.  Trion will be including a new warfront in the expansion, called Karthan ridge.
Karthan Ridge – Opposing sides must run empyrean bombs into their enemies base and detonate them at designated Power Sinks. We’ll be testing this mode out in Open BETA this weekend and make adjustments or try out other formats depending on the feedback we get.
Blowing stuff up does appeal to my inner Dwarf.

Carnage Missions.  The full fruition of Kill 10 X quests without having to actually pick up the quest.  Kill something and the quest will just start.   I expect this to lead to the mass slaughter of creatures on these new continents.

Dimensions.  Rift will be including player housi.... err zones in Storm Legion.  Full free form placement for a zone instead of just a house.  I saw some amazing creations and that was just beta stuff.  Crafters will get to build items to decorate these new areas.  You can even add some NPC's to your area.

On the downside, there does not appear to be much in the way of functional items.  So no true vendors, auction house guys or banks it seems.  For someone as anti-social as me that is a bit disappointing.  I can understand why Trion would not want to go that route though, as it might empty out their social areas.

Crafting.  No new professions, but a new tier of crafting will be added with new recipes.

Visuals.  I was very impressed with the visuals of Storm Legion.  Thew new areas and raid zones looked fantastic.  As did the creatures, and especially the bosses.  This was on my 5 year old box too, so I suspect it might look better for a large chunk of you with newer systems.

Mechs.  As you can see in the video, one of the new dungeons ( Storm Breaker Protocol ) allows you to control a Mech ( think Play as Monster WAR fans ), who has rocket launchers.  Rocket launchers.

New Souls.  There are 4 new souls in the expansion, during my tour I chose the Tactician. He has a big gun and shoots fire and ice, how could I not?  He seemed pretty fun in my brief time playing him.

To answer the question I posed at the start of this post, yes I will play Rift: Storm Legion.  I love new expansions, and there is a lot about Rift I want to check out.  Instant Adventure, Conquest PvP, 2 huge landmasses,  Dimensions and more.  How long will it hold me?  We shall see.

WAR's Single Currency Detailed

Intrepid developer Keaven freeman took to the forums and laid out their plans for unifying all of Warhammer Online's RvR currency into a single version called a War Crest.   There are at least 25 different RvR currencies, so unifying them seems like a great improvement.  On to the details!

The new War Crests:
* cover both Scenarios and ORvR
* stack to 250, allowing you to carry 4k in your currency bag before they spill over into your main backpack
* are bankable and destroyable, but cannot be traded or sold
There will be money changer vendors to help convert any old currency you have into War Crests. There will, of course, be a conversation ratio you will have to keep in mind. Before I list those ratios, let me first give a little background on how we came up with them.
Warpforged, though the highest valued coin in terms of the power level of what you can buy with it, down converts at 1-to-1 all the way to Officer. From there, you jump immediately to Recruit, changing each single Officer coin into 125 Recruits. We’ve taken the same philosophy with converting all coin to War Crests

He's got some nice charts showing the changes as well.  I'll leave those on the thread.

There is a big BUT with all of this.  The vendor pricing is being increased, in some cases by 5x.  Players were obviously concerned.  Keaven did start to address them in reply.

The goal for this was not to make it more difficult to get things, but to make the system less confusing. The vendor adjustments represent the intrinsic value of the old coin, in terms of difficulty in acquiring it. Since the new War Crest would be given out everywhere, it would have been irresponsible not to adjust the vendor prices to accommodate that new fact.

I can certainly understand why some players would be against the 5x price increase.  If they spend their spare currency on things like potions  it seems just like a flat out price increase since they only have the currency they need saved up.  On the other hand, a player like myself has a lot of lower level currency stored up and the price increase is not a big deal.

There is a middle ground here somewhere, as overall a single currency is a great change.  It just shouldn't punish players who spend their tokens as they get them.

There was also a concern over drop rates of War Crests, since the rates are pretty low for high end currencies at the moment.  Keaven addressed those concerns:

RvR currency given out as rewards will be swapped to the new War Crest. Currency drops off player kills will be scaled by your Tier – at least, this is the leading suggestion at this time.
* T1 kills have a 5% chance to drop a War Crest
* T2 kills have a 10% chance to drop a War Crest
* T3 kills have a 15% chance to drop a War Crest
* T4 kills have a 20% chance to drop a War Crest
Keep in mind, you still need to win the loot roll in order to claim the dropped War Crest. Also, these numbers are just a starting point for conversation. I’m interested in hearing how you all feel about these figures, and what suggestions you may have.

I'm still pretty excited about this change.  Moving to a single currency makes things so much simpler and allows for some interesting additions to the game.

To help with the transition, I made a calculator:  http://www.arsenalofwar.com/warcalc

SWTOR 1.5 #3 Data Dump

BioWare put up a new patch to the PTS last night, so I was compelled to see if anything new was added.  For the most part, I saw new vanity pet stuff.  Say what you will about the Cartel Store, it won't be short on pets.  I also expanded my search and found some other interesting things which may or may not be new to the patch.

Some Interesting entries:

Rakata Prime.

PlanetSide 2 Beta Giveaway

It's time for another Giveaway!  This is probably my biggest one yet.  I have 9 PlanetSide 2 beta keys to give out.  PS2 is an amazing game, so this is one you'll want to check out.  What about the poll last week you ask?  Well, PlanetSide 2 is launching November 20th, so I want to get these keys out the door soon :)

To get started with the Giveaway, just Sign In with the widget on your left and start doing missions.  Use the points you gain to buy lottery tickets.  On November 5th, the winners of the keys will be drawn.  That's all there is to it.   On the 5th, I'll add more missions for more chances to get tickets. You could always keep your points for another giveaway too.

What's New?

PvP Poll.  What makes a poll be Player vs Player?  Only the people who choose the winning option get the reward.  In this case, it is a nice piece of loot.  Have your allies get in the battle and vote.

Loot.  I've added Loot to Sites with Benefits!  They are technically consumables which will apply a buff to you while visiting the site.  For this contest, you'll get a 50% point bonus 1 week.  Those who participated in last weeks poll got a token that gives a 25% bonus.

To use your loot, go to http://www.siteswithbenefits.com and log in.  Then go to the Reader tab and hit Show inventory for weritsblog.com.  You should see a use link.

You can find all the details here:  http://www.siteswithbenefits.com/campaign/162010
